Stig Lindberg

Hann kom víða við í sinni hönnun, m.a. keramik, gler, iðnhönnun, textílhönnun, málun og myndskreytingu.

Verk Lindbergs eru skemmtileg og lífleg og á vissan hátt barnsleg. Þau hafa í sér einhver skemmtilegan sjarma og ég fyrir minn part hefði ekkert á móti eins og einu stykki.

****

Stig Lindberg (1926-1982) was one of the most influential Swedish designers. He was a very multi facetet designer and among his work you can find textiles, industrial design, ceramics, glass designs, paintings and illustrations.

Lindberg´s art work is fun, narrative and lively and in a way naive. They have a certain charm and I certainly wouldn´t mind a piece or two.

On my trip to the west I came across a local artist, well actually he was from a town called Hólmavík but I met him in Ísafjörður. He was bringing his birds to a store in Ísafjörður and invited us to come with him to the car where he kept all of his birds (and they are quite a bunch). We bought some of these lovelies and they are so cute and at a very reasonable price if you buy directly from the artist. So if you happen to be near Hólmavík I recommend you try to find him at check his birds out, I understand that he sells them in front of the local store there.

Eigið góðan dag | Enjoy your day

Q&A - Ellen Giggenbach

When we came across Ellen Giggenbach´s work on the internet we just had to get a closer look and get to know her a little better. We share her passion for colorful illustrations, paper projects and mid-century influence. Ellen lives in New-Zealand and she was so kind to let us bombard her with some questions ;)

Where did you study?
I went to high school in New Zealand. Art was defiantly my best subject! Then our family moved to Vienna in Austria for 3 years so my father could work at the United Nations. I liked the atmosphere of the Graphic Design School more than the very fancy Fine Art Academy so I chose to go there till we came back to New Zealand. I then completed 3 years Design School in Wellington and was awarded a Diploma with Distinction in Graphic Design.

Did you always aim at becoming an illustrator?
As a child our family was very crafty, My mother was a professional seamstress, My father was a geochemist but he loved to paint and make furniture and my sister and I loved to draw, sew and knit our own clothes (mainly because at that time New Zealand was very behind in fashion!)

How would you describe your style?
Even though you could call my style Collage because it involves cutting and arranging paper, it is quite formal and graphic.
I grew up surrounded by German traditions (my father carved folk flowers and birds into our Kitchen cupboards),because of this, my work often looks quite Scandinavian and folksy.
I am absolutely passionate about Mid century Design especially children's book illustrations, I particularly love the bright and unusual colour combinations.
I also like very simple beautiful shapes and for me straight lines and circles are the most simple so you will notice my art is almost only made up of these 2 things!

Could you tell us a little about your projects?
During my career I have created designs for most products, I have just finished 2 amazing paper craft books, I have created designs for many greeting cards and stationery products. Recently my designs where featured on Valentines Packaging for the Hyundai Department store in South Korea.

Do you have a project or a piece of work that your are the most proudest of?
My most recent paper craft books which feature a complete Zoo and Town that you can assemble has to be a highlight.

How is your daily life in New-Zealand?
I live in a beautiful little village across from our capital city called Wellington in New Zealand.
I live very near to the hills and forest and the ocean. My home which I share with my husband and two teenage boys is an original mid century house filled with vintage treasures that I love to collect.
I have a lovely sunny studio which I work in every day as soon as the children have left for school.

How is it living in this beautiful country?
I love living in New Zealand for many reasons but the main one is that the culture of New Zealanders or "Kiwis" as they are often called is very relaxed and easy going, they are very  accepting of individually and do not pressure you to conform.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
I love to visit sites such as Pinterest to enjoy images of mid century illustrations and design. The images are so joyful, as soon as I have looked I just want to start a new piece of art!

Do you have a life motto? Something that you find inspirational and drives you?
I have learnt to relax and enjoy the little things in life. Every day I go for a walk, and instead of looking down, I look around me at the flowers and birds, smells and colours, it's about living in the moment,
It helps me appreciate my lovely life!

Ég {hjarta} Sean Sims ... | I {heart} Sean Sims...

I have a huge interest in illustration and when I came across an illustration from Sean Sims I completely fell for his style...colorful, naive and cheerful with a retro twist....my cup of tea. So the Saturday inspiration comes from his cheerful illustration.

All photos come from Sean´s website, which you should definately check out to see some more...

Have a bright and colourful Saturday!

Antoni Gaudí

Þar sem hugurinn er enn í miðjarðarhafshitanum á Spáni ætla ég að hafa spánskt þema þessa vikuna. Þeir sem hafa komið til Barcelona komast ekki hjá því að taka eftir verkum Antoni Gaudí, hann hefur svo sannarlega sett sitt mark á þessa skemmtilegu borg og flest af hans verkum eru á skrá hjá UNESCO.

Park Guell

Park Guell

Þau verk Gaudí sem ég náði að skoða í; Sagrada Familia kirkjan sem enn er ekki tilbúin en nær samt að hafa mikil áhrif á hvern þann sem hana sér, Parc Guell garðurinn sem býður upp á frábært útsýni yfir borgina og er alveg dásamlegt að heimsækja, Casa Battlo húsið sem hannað var fyrir Battlo fjölskylduna...mjög gaman að sjá það utan frá og án efa gaman að skoða það að innan (náði nú því miður ekki að gera það í þessari ferð).

Ætla nú svo sem ekkert að hafa þetta einhvern fyrirlestur en mæli með því að þeir sem hyggja á ferð til Barcelona kynni sér verk þessa snillings.

Spanish theme this week since my mind is still in the mediterrian heat in Spain. Was very inspired by Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona and was so fortunate to see some of his work; Sagrada Familia, Park Guell and Casa Battlo.

Gitte Brandt

There is something enchanting about Gitte Brandt´s paintings. The mild colors and naive style come together in very joyous paintings that would look good in the living room as well as in an art-oriented child´s bedroom.

Gitte is a self-taught painter from Denmark. I like that about her, that she is self-taught -  that if you have a passion for something but don´t have the oppertunity to study it just learn it yourself. Anything is possible if you set your mind to it.

I have been seeing her paintings more often in interior magazines but unfortunately not with my own eyes. With a big birthday coming up this fall maybe I should start hinting someone ;)

Check out her website if you want to see more of her work.
Wednesday today....which means two days till the weekend and easter vacation fast approaching...lovely!

Ég {hjarta}.....| I {heart}....

....Björn Wiinblad (1918-2006)

Mig dreymir um að eignast mynd eftir danska listamanninn Bjorn Wiinblad.

Spil selv

Tivoli - þessi er uppáhalds ;)

Það má finna eina og eina mynd eða veggpjald detta inn á ebay eða etsy en þær fara fljótt - sérstaklega ef þær eru gamlar. Ég er á vaktinni ;)

I have a longing for a print by the danish artist Björn Wiinblad.
It is possible to find work by him on either ebay or etsy but you´d have to act quickly for the right on as they tend to go fast. So I´m on the lookout and will hopefully be lucky ;)
